Virtual try-on in Tamil

Tamil appears in the 47-language list on Looksy's Shopify App Store page. For merchants selling to Tamil-speaking shoppers, this page covers the verified facts, the open questions, and a practical setup path.

Tamil shoppers and your product pages

Tamil is primarily used in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry, in Sri Lanka where it holds official status, and in Singapore, where it is one of the four official languages. It is written in the Tamil script, an abugida in which vowel signs attach to and combine with consonant letters, producing rounded, distinctive letterforms that read left to right. For a Shopify store, the practical implication is font coverage: a theme whose fonts lack Tamil glyphs will show fallback characters or empty boxes, so any Tamil-language storefront needs its typography checked before anything else.

What Looksy's language support covers

Looksy's App Store listing enumerates 47 supported languages, and Tamil is on that list. The listing stops there — it does not spell out whether support means the shopper-facing try-on interface, the merchant dashboard, or both. The honest path is to check rather than assume: the Free plan has unlimited try-ons, so set your storefront to Tamil and step through the full flow as a shopper would before you advertise Tamil support. It also helps to remember what does not need translating — the core output is a photo of the shopper in the garment, which communicates by itself.

Setting up for Tamil-speaking shoppers

Add Tamil as a store language in Shopify's admin, provided your theme and translations support it. Looksy's storefront presence is a theme app extension block placed through the theme editor — no theme code edits, and a clean uninstall if you remove the app. With that in place, use the Free plan's unlimited try-ons to test on real product pages. Pay particular attention to how Tamil script renders inside buttons and short microcopy: complex script shaping and combined vowel-consonant forms can break in fonts that only nominally include Tamil, and short UI strings are where truncation or misrendering shows first.

The try-on flow in any language

The flow itself is language-independent. A shopper uploads a single photo and sees the result on the product page in about 20 seconds, with no app download, account signup, or camera permission involved. From there they can retry with another photo, give feedback, download the image, or share it. Plans start free, with unlimited try-ons and Looksy branding, then move to $14.99, $29, and $79 per month; the $79 Scale plan is the one that adds realtime video try-on. Everything bills through Shopify on usage, without contracts, so a Tamil-language trial needs no long-term commitment.
