Virtual try-on for Shopify, answered
Plain answers to what Shopify merchants actually ask before adding try-on to a product page — how it installs, what it costs, what it needs from your catalog, and where it does not fit.
Getting started
How do I add virtual try-on to my Shopify store?
Install a try-on app from the Shopify App Store and enable it on the products you want it to appear on. Looksy installs as a theme app extension, so it drops onto your product pages without editing theme code, and the free Preview plan lets you test it before paying anything.
Does virtual try-on work with my Shopify theme?
With Looksy, yes — it installs as a Shopify theme app extension rather than by editing theme files, and uninstalling removes it cleanly. Apps that ask you to paste code into your theme are the ones worth checking carefully.
Do shoppers need to download anything?
No. Looksy runs on your product page in the browser. A shopper uploads one photo and sees the piece on themselves — no app install and no account.
Pricing and credits
How much does virtual try-on cost?
Looksy has a free Preview plan and paid plans at $14.99, $29 and $79 a month. Pricing across the category varies widely, and several apps ask you to contact sales rather than publishing a price at all.
What is a try-on credit?
One credit is one generated try-on. Looksy includes 25 credits a month on Preview, then 100, 300 and 600 on Starter, Growth and Scale.
What happens if I run out of credits?
You can keep going at your plan’s overage rate — $0.14 per extra try-on on Starter, $0.12 on Growth and $0.10 on Scale — or move up a plan. Plans are usage-based, with no contract, and cancel from Shopify.
How it works
How does AI virtual try-on work?
The app takes your product image and a shopper’s photo and generates a single image of that product on that person. It is image generation rather than a 3D model, so there is no per-product asset pipeline to build or maintain.
Do I need new product photography?
Not with Looksy — it works from the product images already on your store. Apps built around 3D or AR placement generally do need new assets produced for each product.
What happens to a shopper’s photo?
A shopper uploads a photo so the try-on can be generated. Before installing any try-on app, read its privacy policy and data handling and check that it matches what your own store policy promises shoppers.
Which product categories does virtual try-on suit?
Apparel, eyewear, jewelry and accessories are the common ones, and different techniques suit different categories. The first question is what you sell, not which app scores highest overall.
Choosing an app
How do I choose a virtual try-on app?
Start with your catalog, then compare what each app needs from you — new photography, 3D assets, or the images you already have — and what a month actually costs once you pass the included allowance.
Does virtual try-on reduce returns?
It is widely claimed, and the mechanism is plausible: a shopper who has seen a piece on themselves is guessing less about fit and styling. We do not publish a returns figure for Looksy, because we do not have one we would stand behind. Measure it on your own store.
