Try-on credit

A try-on credit is one unit of usage in a virtual try-on app, typically spent each time the app generates a try-on image or video for a shopper. Credits exist because every AI-generated try-on runs a model on the app vendor’s servers, which has a real cost per render — so pricing is metered rather than flat. Most apps bundle a monthly allowance of credits into each plan and sell additional credits on top.

Why try-on apps meter usage

Most Shopify app features cost the vendor almost nothing per use, so flat monthly pricing works. AI try-on is different: each render consumes real compute, and a store whose shoppers generate thousands of try-ons costs far more to serve than a quiet one. Credits pass that cost through in proportion to activity. The upside for merchants is that the bill tracks genuine shopper engagement; the downside is that usage needs watching, because allowances can run out mid-month.

How allowances typically work

The common structure is a monthly bundle included with the plan, a per-credit price for anything beyond it, and better rates on higher tiers. Looksy follows this shape: its Starter, Growth and Scale plans include 100, 300 and 600 monthly credits respectively, with additional credits priced from $0.14 down to $0.10 as the tier rises. Scale credits can be spent on photo or video try-ons. Looksy’s Free plan sits outside the credit system, with unlimited try-ons, Looksy branding, and a cap on additional revenue rather than on credits.

What to check when comparing credit systems

Credit systems differ in details that matter more than the headline number. Establish what exactly consumes a credit — whether a shopper retrying with a new photo spends another one, and whether failed generations count. Check whether unused credits roll over, what additional credits cost once the allowance is gone, and whether video renders draw from the same pool as photos. A plan that looks generous can behave differently once real shopper behaviour, with its retries and abandoned sessions, meets it.
