Overage rate
An overage rate is the per-unit price you pay for usage beyond what your subscription plan includes. Most app plans bundle a fixed allowance — try-on credits, emails, orders — into the monthly fee; once that allowance is used, each extra unit is billed at the overage rate. It is worth checking before the headline price, because it decides what a busy month actually costs.
How overage rates work
A plan gives you an included allowance for the billing period. Use less and nothing changes; use more and each additional unit is charged at the stated per-unit rate, added to your next bill. On Shopify, apps bill overages as usage charges on your normal Shopify invoice, usually beneath a spending cap you approve when installing the app. The rate almost always falls as you move up plan tiers.
Looksy’s overage rates
In Looksy’s pricing the unit is a try-on credit. Additional credits cost $0.14 each on the Starter plan, $0.12 on Growth and $0.10 on Scale — the rate falls as the monthly fee rises. The Free plan has no credit overage at all: try-ons are unlimited, and its ceiling is additional revenue — a cap Starter and Growth also carry; only Scale removes it. Which structure suits you depends on how spiky your traffic is.
When paying overage beats upgrading
Multiply the units you typically use beyond your allowance by the overage rate, then compare that figure with the price difference to the next tier. Occasional spikes — a launch, a sale — are usually cheaper to absorb at the overage rate than to cover with a permanently higher plan. Consistent overages point the other way: if you pay them most months, the next tier’s larger allowance and lower rate will normally cost less. Check the numbers quarterly rather than setting and forgetting.
