Generative AI try-on
Generative AI try-on is technology that uses image-generation models to render a product onto a photo or live video of a shopper, so they can see the item on their own body before buying. Instead of overlaying graphics on a camera feed, the model synthesises a new image from two inputs — the shopper’s photo and the product photo — and the result reads as a photograph of that person wearing that item.
Generative versus augmented reality
Earlier virtual try-on relied on augmented reality: a 3D model of the product tracked onto a live camera feed. That works well for rigid items like glasses, but clothing drapes, folds and stretches, which 3D overlays handle poorly. A generative model learns those behaviours from images, so it can show a jacket sitting naturally on a particular body without anyone building a 3D asset. The trade-off is that generation takes a moment and the output is an interpretation, not a mirror.
Photo and video try-on
Photo try-on works from one uploaded photo, with the result shown in the browser on the product page; in Looksy’s case there is no app download, no account and no live camera permission. Live video try-on renders the product continuously as the shopper moves, closer to a changing-room mirror, and needs considerably more computation. Looksy offers photo try-on on every plan, with shoppers able to retry, download and share results, and realtime video try-on on its Scale plan.
What it means for a Shopify merchant
Generative systems work from standard product photography rather than 3D assets, which removes the main cost that kept virtual try-on out of reach for smaller stores.
