When is virtual try-on not worth it?

Virtual try-on is not worth it when appearance does not drive the purchase, when your product imagery is too weak to render from, or when traffic is too thin to produce a readable signal.

Shoppers never ask how it looks on them

Try-on answers one question: how does this look on me? If your buyers do not ask it, the widget solves nothing. Replacement parts, chargers, supplements, consumables, and spec-driven gear are bought on compatibility, ingredients, and price — a photorealistic render adds a click without adding information. The same goes for repeat purchases where the shopper already owns the product. Be honest about the moment of decision on your product pages: if it hinges on a size chart, a spec table, or a review rather than a mirror, put your effort into those instead.

Your catalog imagery can’t support good results

AI try-on generates from your existing product photos, so the output inherits their quality. Low-resolution supplier images, heavy crops that cut off the garment, busy backgrounds, and wildly inconsistent shots across the catalog all make weak source material — and a bad try-on result is worse than none, because the shopper blames the product. If most of your catalog looks like that and reshooting or sourcing better imagery is not on the roadmap, fix the imagery problem first; it will improve every part of the product page, not just try-on.

Too little traffic to read the results

Try-on is a feature you evaluate with data — Looksy’s analytics report what shoppers try on, add to cart, and buy. With only a handful of product-page sessions a week, those numbers stay too small to distinguish a win from noise for months. The Free plan removes the money risk — unlimited try-ons, up to $100 of additional revenue, with Looksy branding — but not the attention cost of installing, positioning, and monitoring another widget. If your current bottleneck is getting visitors at all, spend the effort on traffic and revisit try-on when there is behavior to measure.

If you’re unsure, the test costs nothing but time

The cases above are disqualifiers; everything else is a judgment call, and the cheap way to settle it is a small live test. Looksy installs as a theme app extension — added and positioned in the theme editor with no theme code edits, and it uninstalls cleanly — so a failed experiment does not leave debris in your theme. Enable try-on on a few visual products on the Free plan, give it a few weeks of real traffic, and let the analytics decide. If nobody uses it, you have your answer at zero spend; if they do, the disqualifiers did not apply to you.
