Does virtual try-on work for eyewear stores?
Yes — frames sit on the face, so a single photo answers the question shoppers actually have: does this style suit me. For prescription fitting with PD measurement, though, a dedicated eyewear tool beats a general one.
Why frames are the easy case for photo try-on
Glasses and sunglasses sit on the face — the one part of the body every shopper photo includes. A shopper uploads a single photo on your product page and sees the frames on their own face in the browser, then can retry other styles, download the result, or share it. There is no app to install and no live camera permission for the photo flow. The purchase question for most frames is aesthetic: does this shape suit my face, does this color work with my skin and hair. That is exactly the question a photo answers, which is why eyewear is one of the strongest categories for the format.
Prescription fitting is where specialists win
Be clear about the limit. Looksy shows how frames look; it does not measure pupillary distance, segment height, or anything else an optician needs to fit prescription lenses. Dedicated eyewear try-on platforms that capture PD do exist, and for a store whose core business is prescription glasses, a specialist like that beats a general tool — we would rather tell you now than have you discover it after installing. Looksy fits stores where the styling decision is the sale: sunglasses, blue-light and fashion frames, or prescription ranges where you already collect measurements through a separate step in your ordering process.
Seeing frames in motion on the Scale plan
A still photo shows frames head-on, and faces are not flat — some shoppers want to know how frames read from an angle or while they move. Looksy’s Scale plan adds realtime video try-on, so the try-on is not limited to a single generated still. For most eyewear stores the photo flow is the sensible starting point, because it asks nothing of the shopper beyond one upload, and video is the upgrade to consider once photo try-on has proved its place on your product pages. Scale’s credit allowance covers photo or video from the same pool, so you are not buying two separate features.
Working out whether it earns its keep
Looksy publishes no conversion or returns figures for eyewear, because an honest number depends on your frames, your traffic and your prices. Run the test on your own store instead. Put try-on on part of your frame catalog — the Free plan costs nothing, with unlimited try-ons under Looksy branding and a $100 cap on additional revenue — and let the analytics show which frames get tried on, added to cart and bought. Compare them with similar frames without the widget over the same period. If tried-on frames sell better, widen the rollout; if they do not, uninstall. Looksy installs as a theme app extension, so uninstalling leaves no code behind.
