Is virtual try-on worth it for small stores?
Usually yes, because the cost of finding out is zero: Looksy's Free plan gives unlimited try-ons, up to $100 of additional revenue, with Looksy branding. The real question is whether your products suit try-on at all.
The free plan removes the usual risk
For most store software, the small-store question is whether new revenue will cover the subscription. Looksy's Free plan sidesteps that: unlimited try-ons at no monthly cost, up to $100 of additional revenue, with Looksy branding. A small store can install it, let real shoppers use it, and watch what happens without committing a dollar. The trade-offs are real — shoppers see Looksy's branding, and the $100 cap makes Free a working trial rather than a permanent home. Exactly what happens when you reach the cap is worth checking in the app before you rely on it, but as a test, the downside is close to zero.
Setup effort is small enough for a one-person store
Small stores rarely have a developer on call, so installation effort matters. Looksy installs as a Shopify theme app extension: you position the block in the theme editor, it makes no edits to your theme code, and it uninstalls cleanly if you decide against it. Shoppers need nothing on their side either — one uploaded photo shows the result on the product page in the browser, with no app download, account, or live camera permission. Budget an afternoon to install, place the block, and run a few test try-ons on your own products before shoppers see it.
How to judge whether it earned its place
Looksy publishes no conversion statistics or case studies, so do not expect a benchmark to compare against — judge it on your own numbers. The built-in analytics show what shoppers try on, add to cart, and buy, which tells you whether the feature is being used and whether those shoppers behave differently from other visitors. The Free plan's $100 additional-revenue cap doubles as a signal: hitting it means Looksy's attribution credits try-on with $100 in sales. Before treating that as proof, check in the app how Looksy defines additional revenue — revenue attributed to a feature and revenue caused by it are not automatically the same thing.
When it is probably not worth it
Try-on only helps when seeing a product on your own body answers a real question — think apparel, eyewear, jewelry, accessories. If your catalog is not worn, skip it. Very low-traffic stores face a different issue: the Free plan costs nothing, but a handful of sessions a week will take months to produce enough try-ons to judge anything. And if Looksy branding in the try-on experience is unacceptable from day one, your real entry price is Starter at $14.99 a month, with 100 photo try-on credits and a $500 additional-revenue cap — a different calculation than free.
