Does virtual try-on help gift shoppers?

Indirectly. Try-on renders a product on the shopper’s own uploaded photo, so it helps self-purchase most. For gift buyers the value is secondary — judging style on a real person and sharing results — and it does not solve recipient sizing.

Why try-on is built for self-purchase

Looksy’s photo try-on works from one uploaded photo and shows the product on that person in about 20 seconds. The person in the result is whoever appears in the uploaded photo — for a shopper browsing for themselves, that is exactly right. A gift buyer who uploads their own photo sees the sweater on themselves, not on the recipient, which answers “do I like this product” but not “will it suit them.” That is the honest boundary: try-on removes doubt about the item, not about the match between item and recipient.

Where gift buyers still get real value

Seeing a product on a real body instead of a flat product photo helps a gift buyer judge color, cut, and how an item actually sits, information a mannequin shot hides. Looksy also lets shoppers download and share try-on results, which opens two useful moves: a buyer can send a result to the recipient as a “would you wear this?” check, or send the product link so the recipient tries it on themselves. Since the photo flow needs no app or account, that second option is a low-friction ask.

Sizing the recipient is not solved

Looksy’s Size Help works from your own product size charts, which is useful when the buyer already knows the recipient’s measurements, and little help when they do not. No try-on tool can infer a recipient’s size from the buyer’s photo. Practical fixes sit outside the app: a clear size chart on the page, gift receipts, and a visible exchange policy do more for nervous gift buyers than any AI feature. Treat try-on as a style-confidence tool for gifting and let your returns policy carry the sizing risk.

How to see whether gift traffic uses try-on

Looksy’s analytics show what shoppers try on, add to cart, and buy, and Shopify’s own reports show how your traffic and sales move through holiday periods. Comparing try-on activity during a gift-heavy window against a normal week would tell you whether gift shoppers engage with the widget at all — but how finely the Looksy dashboard breaks activity down, by product or by date range, is worth checking in the app before you build reporting around it. If gift-heavy periods show flat try-on usage, that is a signal to promote result sharing and the product-link option rather than expecting buyers to try items on for someone else.
