Do try-on apps need a developer to install?
Why theme app extensions changed the answer
Older Shopify apps often injected snippets directly into a theme’s Liquid files, which is where the developer requirement came from — someone had to place the code, style it, and remove it later. Shopify’s theme app extension system replaced that pattern. Apps built on it, including Looksy, ship their storefront widget as a block you add and position inside the theme editor. The app never edits your theme’s code, the block moves with drag-and-drop like any native theme section, and removing the app removes its block cleanly. For apps built this way, there is no code for a developer to write.
What installing Looksy actually involves
Install runs through the Shopify App Store like any other app. From there, the try-on block is added in the theme editor: open the product page template, add the Looksy block, and drag it to the position you want. The editor previews the placement as you work, and because Shopify lets you edit unpublished themes, you can position the block on a duplicate of your live theme before publishing. Whether a full try-on can be run inside that preview is a Looksy-specific detail — check the app documentation or ask support. There is nothing to paste into theme files, no Liquid to edit, and no command line involved.
When a developer is still worth hiring
A developer becomes useful at the edges, not for the install itself. Heavily customized themes, page builders that replace the standard product template, or a brand that wants the widget restyled beyond what the app’s settings expose are the usual reasons. How much visual control Looksy’s settings give you is worth checking in the app or with Looksy support before paying for custom work — the answer may make the developer unnecessary. If your theme is older and predates Shopify’s block-based editing, ask support about the best path; that is a case where help with the theme itself, not the app, can be worth it.
Checks to run before going live
Even without a developer, spend a few minutes verifying the result. Confirm the block renders where you placed it on the product template, check the page on a phone as well as a desktop browser, and run a try-on yourself — shoppers upload one photo and get a result on the product page in about 20 seconds, so a full test is quick. If anything looks off, Looksy’s listed resources — the FAQ, tutorial, and app documentation — and support provided by Looksy are the first stop. Because the app never edits theme code, uninstalling later leaves your theme clean.
