Do I need new product photography for virtual try-on?
Not with Looksy — it works from the product images already on your store. Apps built around 3D or AR generally do need new assets produced per product, and that is the largest hidden cost in this category.
The hidden cost in try-on projects
The monthly fee is rarely what makes a try-on project expensive. Asset production is. If every product needs a 3D model or a new studio shoot before it can be enabled, the real cost is measured in weeks of work and a per-product bill that scales with your catalog. An app that reads the images you already have has none of that.
What makes an existing image work well
Product shots that isolate the item clearly tend to generate better than heavily styled lifestyle images, because there is less ambiguity about where the product ends. Consistent lighting across a category helps too. You do not need to reshoot; you may find that reordering which image sits first on a handful of product pages is enough.
When new photography is worth it anyway
If your product images are inconsistent, low resolution, or shot at angles that hide the thing a shopper cares about, that is a problem for your product pages generally, not just for try-on. Fixing it improves conversion whether or not you add try-on, so it is worth doing on its own merits rather than as a try-on prerequisite.
How to test this in an afternoon
Install on the free Preview plan, enable three products with photography typical of your catalog — one good, one average, one you are unsure about — and look at the results. Twenty-five credits is more than enough to answer the only question that matters: does this look right on my products.
