Can I test try-on on a development store?
Generally yes. A development store runs the same admin, theme editor, and App Store as a paid store, and Looksy’s Free plan means testing costs nothing upfront. Confirm anything dev-store-specific in-app or with Looksy support before relying on it.
What a development store gives you
A development store is a free store created through a Shopify Partner account, typically used to build a client store before handoff or to test apps and themes away from a live shop. It runs the same admin and theme editor as a paid store, and you can install apps from the App Store to evaluate them. It is not identical to a live store in every respect — checkout is test-only, for example — so treat it as a place to judge setup and result quality rather than real-world sales behavior.
The Free plan keeps evaluation free
Looksy’s Free plan includes unlimited try-ons with Looksy branding and up to $100 of additional revenue, so evaluating the app does not require picking a paid tier first. Billing is usage-based and runs through Shopify with no contracts, which means there is nothing locked in if you decide the app is not a fit. For a testing setup, that combination matters more than dev-store status: you can install, run try-ons on your own product pages, and judge result quality before any money changes hands.
What to confirm before relying on dev-store results
Looksy does not publish dev-store-specific behavior, so verify rather than assume. Check in the app whether installation and plan selection work the same on a development store, and ask Looksy support if anything looks different. It is also worth asking how test activity is treated: additional-revenue caps and analytics are tied to what shoppers try on, add to cart, and buy, and a store with only test checkouts may not exercise those features the way a live store does. The FAQ, Tutorial, and App Documentation linked from the App Store listing are the places to confirm specifics.
Moving from a test store to your live store
App installs on Shopify are per store, so if your live shop is separate from the test store, plan to repeat the setup there — block placement, settings, and plan choice — treating the test install as a rehearsal. The second pass is quick: Looksy is a theme app extension added and positioned in the theme editor, with no theme code edits, and it uninstalls cleanly if you change direction. If instead you intend to transfer the development store itself to a paid plan, check with support what carries over. To stage changes on a live store, an unpublished theme works too — see the preview FAQ.
